Synopsis

Sri Lanka's Cricketer Angelo Mathews, Allrounder, Former Captain was controversially given a "time out" in a World Cup 2023 on Monday, November 06. The incident occurred during the Bangladesh-Sri Lanka ODI World Cup match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. The clash against Bangladesh, making him the first player to suffer such a dismissal in the 146-year history of international cricket. Mathews took more than two minutes to take the strike, prompting Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan to make an appeal, which was upheld by the on-field umpire.

Mathews came in to bat after Sadira Samarawickrama fell in the 25th over but was unable to secure his helmet strap tightly enough, an action that delayed the resumption of play. After Bangladesh's appeal, the umpires held a long discussion with Mathew and the players.

Mathews, however, refused to believe that. He took to social media to make his point loud and clear.

There are 10 modes of dismissal in cricket, the rarest of which is "timed out".

According to the Laws of Cricket: After the fall of a wicket or the batsman's retirement, the incoming player must be ready to face the ball within two minutes. They ordered Mathews out and the 36-year-old veteran walked off involuntarily and most of the spectators were shocked by the decision. A few Bangladeshi fans applauded.

Those rules supersede the Marylebone Cricket Club’s Laws of Cricket, which give batters three minutes to face up.

Angelo Mathews has become the first batter in history to be timed out in international cricket, adding another layer of distrust in the bitter relationship between the Sri Lanka and Bangladesh men's teams.

The Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians reports that there have been such six instances of "time out" in first-class cricket. "There have been no instances recorded in List A or Twenty20 cricket until Mathews."

Mathews was playing in his 225th one-day international on Monday in a career which has yielded 5,900 runs and 122 wickets. He has also played 106 Tests and 78 T20 internationals.

What Happened Actually:

Mathews was already on the field and in his final preparations before taking the strike against Shakib Al Hasan.  His helmet strap broke just as he was tightening it around his chin. He called for a replacement helmet, which got him run out by Chamika Karunaratne. Shakib then appeared to start a discussion with umpire Marais Erasmus, after which Mathews, as he was not ready to face his first ball within two minutes to do so as allowed in the ICC Playing Conditions, was informed that his time was up.

During the innings break, reserve umpire Adrian Holdstock explained the dismissal process to broadcaster ICC.tv: "The fielding captain began to appeal to Marais Erasmus, who was the permanent umpire, that he wanted to appeal for a time-out."

Mathews was not yet donned the new helmet and Karunaratne was still standing near the pitch when the news of his dismissal was relayed to Mathews. At this stage, at least three minutes and twenty seconds had passed since previous batter Sadira Samarawickrama was out. But in the Video footage of the incident showed that somewhere between one minute and 50 seconds and one minute and 55 seconds had passed since Samarawickrama was dismissed.

This enraged Mathews, who argued with opposition captain Shakib, before being given his marching orders from the umpires. Sri Lanka coach Chris Silverwood was also non-plussed and appeared to storm off in the direction of the third umpire's room.

Matthews initially thought the umpire was not serious, but quickly wore a concerned expression and engaged in lengthy discussions with both Erasmus and square-leg umpire Richard Illingworth.

Erasmus then approached Shakib and had a quick talk (the second of the two), after which Mathews also spoke briefly to Shakib, who offered to comfort Mathews on the shoulder. But in the end, the decision to rule him was upheld, with Matthews gesturing more animatedly and visibly upset from his broken helmet strap.

By the time Mathews was officially out, Bangladesh had long since broken their bones, and had taken their place on the field, with Shakib at the top of his mark, ready to bowl.

Mathews was seen very upset at the way he was dismissed when he left the field. As he left the field, he kicked his helmet in frustration and Chucked his bat. His dismissal left Sri Lanka in significant trouble, at 135 for 5. Charith Asalanka then scored a century, though, helping his side recover to 279.

Matches between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have been heated on several occasions recently, stemming back to suggestions of disrespect when adopting the 'naagin' (snake) celebration.

History Behind Timed Out

The 1980 Code added "time out" to the statute as a specific method of dismissal. This gives the incoming batter two minutes to "step onto the field of play". In the 2000 Code, this was amended to three minutes for the batter to be "in position to take the keeper or ready for his partner to receive the next ball". However, the first printed Laws of Cricket, in 1775, already required umpires to "come within two minutes for every man out".

In 1919, Sussex cricketer Harold Heggett was dismissed by umpire Alfred Street for "time out" in a first-class county championship match with Somerset at Taunton. The MCC, then in charge of the law, later ruled that the umpire was right to end Sussex's innings when Heggett failed to appear within two minutes, but that the batter should be marked as "missing", as it appeared in 1920. Edition of the Wisden Cricketers' Almanac. Under current rules, Haygate would have been recorded as an "absent hit" and that is how his innings is now recorded in the Cricket Archives. The match ended in a tie.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly escaped being timed-out when he had to rush onto the pitch after the fall of a wicket during a South Africa Test at Cape Town in 2007.

India had lost a wicket and with next batsman Sachin Tendulkar not allowed to take the field owing the time he had spent off the pitch, and VVS Laxman taking a shower, the onus to come out fell on Ganguly, who was still in his tracksuit.

The timed-out rule in Tests was three minutes but Proteas skipper Graeme Smith did not appeal and waited patiently for Ganguly to stride out despite exceeding the time limit.

Ex-india batsman Gautam Gambhir, on 'X', said: "Absolutely pathetic what happened Delhi today! #Angelo Mathews."

Australian Test batsman Usman Khawaja also blasted the decision.

"Angelo made his crease then his helmet strap broke. How is that timed out? I'm all for timed out if he doesn't make his crease but this is ridic. No different then a batsman getting to the crease then taking 3 minutes to face up," he wrote on social media.
