Dr. Anup Ghoshal(1944/1945 – 15 December 2023) was an Indian Bengali singer, composer and music artist and former Trinamool MLA . He is Satyajit Ray Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne and Heerak Rajar Deshe (Diamond King's Land) >Sagina Mahato" Through a Bengali film called. gained fame especially by singing in films. Although he is a renowned Nazrul Geeti singer, he can also be heard singing other genres. He is mainly famous for giving voice to Nazrul's Shyama Sangeet.He was known in his native Bengal primarily as one of the foremost artists of the golden age of Nazrulgeeti (c. 1930s–1970s). West Bengal Government awarded Anup Ghoshal with 'Nazrul Smriti Award' in 2011 and 'Sangeet Mahasamman' in 2013.
Late Musician Anup Ghosal was admitted to the hospital for the last 7 days. Ventilation was maintained. The former MLA of Uttarpara breathed his last at Rasbihari Fortis Hospital at 1.45 pm that day. He was 78 years old.
Anup Ghoshal was born in 1944 or 1945 to Amulya Chandra Ghosal and Lavanya Ghosal. His mother encouraged her to sing by arranging for his musical training at the age of 4. Her first performance took place soon after, when he sang for a children's program called Shishu Mahal from All India Radio, Kolkata.
Ghosal's musical education continued until he was about 26 years old. During his studies he became proficient in Thumri, Khayal, Bhajan, Ragapradhan, Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrul Geeti, Dwijendra Geeti, Rajinikanth's Songs, Modern Bengali Songs and several other folk songs. He received musical education from teachers such as Sangeetacharya Tarapada Chakraborty and Sangeetacharya Sukhendu Goswami. He learned Rabindra Sangeet from Devabrata Biswas and various Bengali songs from Manindra Chakraborty.
He achieved a university degree in humanities from Ashutosh College, Kolkata, and a master's and PhD from Rabindra Bharati University. The title of his thesis was "Nazrul Giti—Form and Rashanbhuti". During his studies he participated in many music competitions in which he scored the highest marks in various classical, light classical, Bengali songs (traditional and modern), Rabindra Sangeet and folk songs.
He stood first in the 'Sangeet Bharati Degree Examination' in 1966-1967 and received a gold medal. He was a National Scholar elected in 1966-1967. Ghoshal's first venture into films was as a playback singer at the age of 19, when he sang for the film Gupi Gain Bagha Bain, written and directed by Satyajit Ray. His association with Satyajit Ray continued, sometimes as an assistant music director, and he eventually won the National Award in 1981 for Heerak Raja's Desha. He has sung in various Bengali and Hindi films as well as Bhojpuri and Assamese films.
Anup Ghoshal toured the UK, USA, Canada and Germany for various musical concerts. Until his death, he traveled to Western countries to promote Indian musical culture with references to Bengali songs along with Bengali folk songs. He has written a book on Indian music, The World of Songs. Ghoshal was elected as one of the members of West Bengal Legislative Assembly from Uttarpara constituency (Hooghly 185) in 2011 as a candidate of All India Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee.
He performed music in Satyajit Ray's films like 'Gupi Gain Bagha Bain', 'Hirak Rajar Deshe'. The song that fans still haven't forgotten. He was associated with music since childhood. It is said that his mother Lavanya Ghoshal was the biggest inspiration in his life. He received immense appreciation in the music world mainly for Nazrul Geeti and Shyama Sangeet. Apart from this, the artist has performed music in films in various languages including Bengali and Hindi. The audience did not forget his song in the film 'Sagina Mahato' directed by Tapan Sinha. He is also behind making the song 'Tujhse Naraj Nehi Zindagi' from the film 'Masoom' unforgettable. Besides Bengali and Hindi songs, he has also sung in Bhojpuri and Assamese.
He was conferred a honorary citizenship of Chicago in 1994 by Mayor Richard M. Daley, as well as other awards:
