The International Day of Human Solidarity observed on December 20 is an annual international day of solidarity of the United Nations and its member states. Its main objective is to make member states aware of global poverty reduction objectives and initiatives and to recognize the universal value of solidarity by formulating and sharing poverty reduction strategies of independent countries around the world. The day is promoted by the Global Solidarity Fund and the United Nations Development Programme , which focuses on achieving the goals set to eradicate global poverty. A person can participate in or celebrate the day by contributing to education or helping the poor or the physically or mentally disabled. Instead governments are encouraged to respond to poverty and other social barriers through the Sustainable Development Goals.
